010 of 2011Assented 2 May 2011
This Act amends the Criminal Code to allow for infringement notices (fines) to be issued for certain offences under the Code. It also provides for monitoring of the new infringement notice scheme by the Ombudsman, with a focus on its impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Impact
Alleged offenders may receive infringement notices instead of facing court for some offences. The Ombudsman will monitor the scheme's impact, particularly on Indigenous communities. Police and public authorities may be required to provide information to the Ombudsman.
