Committee's Treaty Function

Uniform Legislation and Statutes Review Committee· 27 March 2018general_report

The WA parliamentary committee recommends that its treaty scrutiny function be removed. It argues that it lacks the resources and time to meaningfully review treaties, and that the Commonwealth government already consults extensively with the WA government. The committee believes its efforts are ineffective and duplicate existing processes.

Impact

The Legislative Council will no longer receive reports from this committee on the potential impact of treaties on WA's sovereignty and law-making powers. The Standing Orders of the Legislative Council will be amended.
