Scrutiny of Treaties
Uniform Legislation and Statutes Review Committee· 22 November 2011general_report
The WA Uniform Legislation and Statutes Review Committee recommends abolishing its treaty scrutiny function. It finds the process ineffective due to confidentiality constraints, short timeframes, and limited resources. The Committee believes state consultation occurs adequately through other avenues.
Impact
The Legislative Council will no longer have a committee specifically tasked with scrutinising treaties. This may reduce parliamentary oversight of Commonwealth treaty-making and its impact on WA.
