Cost-of-living relief
245. Ms Sook Yee Lai to
the Premier:
I refer to the Cook Labor government's commitment to
deliver cost-of-living relief for Western Australians.
Can the Premier
please outline to the house how the Cook Labor government is supporting
households by providing meaningful cost-of-living support?

I thank the member
for Bibra Lake for the question. It is an important one because it is an
important day. Let the record show that on budget day, Western Australia has
the fastest growing economy in the nation, more people than ever in full-time
jobs, education or training, the lowest debt burden of any state and—I am sure
the member for Bibra Lake will be pleased—a team in the top two of the AFL
ladder!
I am pleased to
confirm that the WA Labor government has had a role in three of four of those
achievements. Building WA's economic strength has taken hard work and sustained
financial discipline over many years. Our economy is strong and therefore
better equipped to deal with the international shocks that impact all of us,
and we want the benefits of a stronger economy to be felt broadly by all
Western Australians. The pandemic and the conflict in Europe and the Middle
East has created challenges; we understand that. Because of strong economic
management, government is in the position to support WA households.
When I was elected,
I said I would do two key things. One was that we would keep the economy strong,
and the second was that we would help those who are doing it tough. In the face
of these global price shocks, today's budget will build on the $1 billion
in cost-of-living relief we delivered in last year's budget. The benefits will
be spread far and wide—drivers facing a hip pocket hit at the bowser, families
with school kids, commuters using our first class public transport system,
regional travellers, renters and first home buyers, seniors and those who are
upskilling and training. The support embedded in this budget will be felt
widely and immediately. It is also about setting our state up for the long term.
That means investing in jobs, health and housing. It means investing in it like
never before. It means investing in the energy transition and delivering more
generation, transmission and battery storage to make energy more affordable for
households and businesses.
Whether you live in
the suburbs of Perth, one of our seven regional cities or the towns and remote
communities they support, and whether you support the Eagles or the Dockers
atop the ladder, this budget delivers for you. It delivers for all Western Australians.
Most importantly, it will keep WA strong.
