Building Hospitals Fund
204. Ms Colleen Egan to
the Minister for Health Infrastructure:
I refer to the Cook
Labor government's Building Hospitals Fund and its commitment to delivering the
care Western Australians need when they need it. Can the minister please
outline to the house how the fund is supporting the delivery of new hospital
capacity across our state?

I thank the member
for her question. As we know, we are facing extraordinary population growth. In
fact, in the last five years, it was cited to me that we saw an additional
330,000 people, which is the equivalent of the Northern Territory. For that
reason—for that population growth—we have a critical focus on investing in the
infrastructure to meet that demand. Nothing is more important than investing in
health infrastructure. It was fantastic to join the Premier yesterday to
announce an additional $1.5 billion investment in infrastructure in our
hospital system. It is very clear; we can see that change. We can see the
effects of the investment across Western Australia. We made that announcement
at the women's and babies' hospital when we were there. The activity and progression
already is exciting. We will deliver that project in 2029. Of course, that is
just one of a large-scale number of projects.
In Bunbury, work is
well underway, with the tower going up—the single largest investment in our
state's history in a regional hospital. In Geraldton, a major redevelopment
with a new emergency department will be completed soon. I really am excited for
the community. In addition, there is our new commitment for an oncology unit. For
Royal Perth Hospital, we have appointed a preferred contractor and we expect
ground to break this year. Peel Health Campus also has an early preferred
contractor but significant groundworks have already been undertaken. There is a
long list, including Tom Price Hospital, Laverton Hospital, Byford Health Hub
and the Fremantle mental health beds. There are major upgrades underway at Sir
Charles Gairdner Hospital to the intensive care unit and emergency department
and the Karratha step-up, step-down facility. There is an additional increase
of $214 million on top of the health maintenance blitz. We are doing that
through the Office of Major Transport Infrastructure Delivery. We are changing
the way we do things. We are shaking things up to accelerate that delivery. This
week's announcement of an extra $1.5 billion demonstrates that we are
absolutely committed to upgrading our hospitals across WA.
