Cattle transport—Fremantle port
202. Hon Amanda Dorn to
the Minister for Agriculture and Food:
I refer to the
minister's 10 March response to question without notice 94, confirming that authority
exists to prevent or suspend transport and loading when heat stress is
identified, and to independent veterinary analysis using industry-standard mineral
liberation analyser methodology that determined significant heat stress
conditions on 2 and 21 January (THI 82–83).
(1) What action will the minister take to
address measured heat stress that occurred when authority existed to prevent
it?
(2) What prevented intervention on these
dates when authority existed and heat stress was measured?
(3) Which agency or agencies have the
authority to prevent or suspend farmed animal transport and loading when heat
stress is identified?

I thank the member
for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) As outlined in my response on 10 March, the
Australian Government regulates the export of livestock from Australian ports,
including requirements for the presence of accredited veterinarians for
ensuring the health and welfare of livestock before and during export.
