Question
I refer to the Government's $150,000 grant allocation for the new "Gist" program aimed at curbing the influence of harmful online content on young people, and I ask:(a) what safeguards are in place to make sure the content is age appropriate for students;(b) is parental consent a requirement for children who participate in the workshops; and(c) will parents be granted access to workshop materials?
Answer
(a) Content has been developed by public health researchers and sex education experts aligned with existing education curriculum. The Western Australian program will include training for classroom teachers to deliver the program in line with best practice.
(b) Consent is not required to attend the workshops, aligning with standard relationships and sexuality education practice where parents do not provide consent for curriculum delivery.
(c) Parents will be able to access a high-level summary of the workshop content with additional information available on the program website.
