I thank the honourable
member for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided
by the Minister for Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence.
(1) For reporting purposes, a "refuge
unit" refers to capacity in a family and domestic violence crisis
accommodation facility that can accommodate a victim-survivor with or without
accompanying children on any given night.
(2) The definition reflects the range of
configurations in crisis accommodation facilities. For example, in a communal
refuge configuration, victim-survivors and accompanying children typically
share one room. In a core and cluster refuge model, one self-contained unit, often
including private bathroom and amenities, accommodates a victim-survivor and
their accompanying children.
(3) As at 5 May 2026, since 2017:
(a) there have been seven new
purpose-built facilities; and
(b) there have been seven projects that
refurbished existing facilities to expand their capacity.
