Question

Penguin enclosure—Penguin Island70.Hon Rob Horstmanto theMinister for the Environment:I refer to Penguin Island and the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, currently featured by Sir David Attenborough's team in the upcomingBlue Planetseries, placing Penguin Island and Western Australia on the global stage.(1) Is the minister aware that the existing Penguin Island penguin enclosure has been removed and that the government has not committed to investing in a replacement mainland sanctuary facility?(2) Why has the government declined to support the development of a conservation-led mainland sanctuary that would provide ongoing wildlife protection, education opportunities and sustainable tourism outcomes?(3) What steps is the minister taking to ensure that WA does not lose the opportunity to protect and appropriately showcase this internationally recognised marine environment?

Answer

Hon Matthew Swinbourn replied:I thank the member for some notice of the question.(1)–(3) Penguin Island is an important conservation and tourism asset, and the welfare of the little penguins remains a priority of the state government. A range of management measures are in place to minimise disturbance, manage visitor access and support habitat protection and restoration, particularly during breeding periods and extreme heat conditions. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions has delivered upgraded visitor facilities on the island to enhance education awareness of its unique wildlife. These improvements support the protection of little penguins while enabling visitors to continue to enjoy the island. The state government, through Tourism WA, has undertaken a feasibility study, business case and concept plan for a new mainland Rockingham discovery centre, incorporating stakeholder and community consultation. This will inform any future government support of this project. Penguin enclosure—Penguin Island
