Fuel supply—Regions
178. Mr Peter Rundle to
the Premier:
Over two weeks, the
opposition has asked one simple question: When will adequate diesel supply
reach regional Western Australia? On the final sitting day before Parliament
rises, that question still has not been answered. Farmers, truck drivers, miners,
fishers and small businesses are all operating in uncertainty. Tourism
operators are now sounding the alarm, with reports of the Exmouth and northern
roadhouses running out of diesel or, where diesel is available, it is pushing
$4 a litre. For the 11th time, we ask: When, specifically, will a reliable
diesel supply be restored to regional Western Australia?

I thank the member
for the question. As the member knows, we are currently being impacted by a
global conflict in Iran, which is significantly damaging confidence around fuel
security in the state and across the nation. That is one of the reasons why the
Prime Minister today convened a meeting of National Cabinet to continue to
monitor how supplies are progressing and how states are faring. I am very
pleased that the Prime Minister was able to show that leadership, which comes
on top of the work that he has done to temporarily suspend fuel standards in
relation to sulphur content in fuels, increasing the overall availability of
fuel domestically, and also a 20% reduction or run-down of the national
reserves to ensure that we can get extra stock into the system. We are in a
very strong position to now be able to move forward as part of the plan that
the Prime Minister put forward. We are very much looking forward to those
supplies getting to regional Western Australians as soon as possible.
