Question

Alcoa—Forest clearing97.Mr David Boltto thePremier:I have a supplementary question. Under the reformed Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act and proposed bilateral agreements, how would the Premier ensure the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and the Environmental Protection Authority are able to detect or stop any further unlawful clearing or breaches in the future?

Answer

Mr Roger Cook replied:What I am detecting is that the member opposite does not care about the families and the workers whose livelihoods will be jeopardised by driving Alcoa down. They will scale back the industry. As a result of that, people will lose jobs in the electorate of Murray–Wellington. People will lose jobs. Is that what the member wants? Is that what he wants?Mr Lachlan Hunterinterjected.Several members interjected. The Speaker:Order!Member for Central Wheatbelt! Member for Geraldton! Members!Mr Roger Cook:I heard an interjection from someone over there, but there were so many. I heard one saying, "Who are you fighting for?" I am fighting for the Western Australian environment. I am fighting for Western Australian jobs. I am fighting for WA workers, people who the opposition is turning their backs on. I am fighting for jobs. I am fighting for health. I am fighting for housing. These are priorities that Western Australians want. They do not want the distractions, the negativity and, quite frankly—Several members interjected. The Speaker:Members! Leader of the Opposition!Mr Roger Cook:They want a government that is focused on jobs, health and housing. They want a government that is focused on protecting the environment. They want a government that will uphold the living standards of Western Australians. We know that the member for Murray–Wellington does not respect that. He does not respect those jobs and we will make sure that his community hears about it.The Speaker:Members, that concludes question time. Alcoa—Forest clearing
