Can the minister advise the house on how this government is ensuring that Western Australians have the tools to navigate their healthcare options before they need them?

Answer

Ms Meredith Hammat replied:I thank the member for the question and her ongoing interest in all matters relating to health. Western Australians have access to a wider variety of healthcare options than ever before, so one of the things we are very keen to ensure that is that people are aware of those options. Our government, as members here know, continues to invest record amounts in hospitals and in the health workforce. Of course, emergency departments will always be there for those who need them. But one of the things we are very clear about is the diversification of treatment options for patients, particularly delivering care in the community and closer to home. That is reflected in our WA virtual emergency department, which I have talked about many times in this place, as well as the delivery of our expandedscope of practice for pharmacists, who now can treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections, resupply oralcontraceptive pills, and soon, diagnose and treat a dozen more simple common illnesses. The work we are doing in the Cook Labor government stands alongside the work the Albanese government is doing as it continues to deliver more Medicare urgent care clinics throughout WA, as well as its 24/7 helpline 1800Medicare. My federal counterpart, Minister Butler, was here just last week, and I think in that time he opened three Medicare urgent care clinics.Members, this is because time and time again it is Labor governments that invest in affordable and accessible healthcare services, and we want to make sure that the people of Western Australia benefit from all of them. That is why earlier today, along with the Premier, I launched a new website, Access Health WA, that will make it easier for Western Australians to know all their options. We know that for many people understanding the health system can be complex, so Access Health WA provides clear information and easy tools to ensure that people get information and can make a choice about the most convenient care for their health needs. A one-stop shop website has been created, along with a new information campaign, which we have named "Where to go when". It will include advertising so that the community can access information on television and at out-of-home locations including cinemas as well as through the press, radio and social media. We are giving people information so that they can understand the wide variety of healthcare options that are available to them, and we are particularly reinforcing the availability of the primary care options that we have been working on in conjunction with the Albanese government. It means that when a parent is wondering where they can go when their child has a fractured bone or maybe when a cold has turned into a flu, people will be able to access information and understand the options they have, knowing that they have more options than ever before.Members, this strategy, the Access Health campaign, forms part of the government's $140 million 2026 Winter Strategy, and is aimed at ensuring all Western Australians get access to health care when and where they need it.
