Question

I refer to the 'Global Methane Pledge,' that aims to collectively reduce global methane emissions across all sectors by at least 30 per cent below 2020 levels by 2030 and I note that Australia signed this pledge in October 2022, and I ask:(a) what steps have been taken by the state government in the last three years to ensure a reduction of methane emissions by WA's LNG industry;(b) can the Minister please table the most up to date data on methane emissions from the WA LNG industry:(i) if no to (b), why not; and(c) can the Minister please table any projections on the WA LNG industry’s future methane emissions:(i) if no to (c), why not?

Answer

(a)     The Global Methane Pledge was entered into by the Commonwealth Government. The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE), is implementing the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Action Plan and continuing to meet its commitments under the World Bank’s ‘Zero Routine Flaring by 2030’ initiative. (b-c) The Commonwealth Clean Energy Regulator collects and publishes information about emissions, including methane, under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme.
