Demersal fishing ban—Impact on small business owners
225. Hon Rod Caddies to
the Minister for Fisheries:
I refer to the
meeting request from various individual small-business owners who have been
impacted by the minister's demersal fishing decisions.
(1) Will the minister commit to meeting
with small-business owners who request a meeting with her?
(2) If no to (1), why not?
(3) Will the minister consider future
changes to the total and permanent ban on commercial demersal fishing in the
west coast bioregion to allow small local family businesses to supply local
retailers like fish and chip shops?
(4) If no to (3), why not?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1)–(4) I have met and continue to meet regularly
with stakeholders from across the fishing sector as well as organisations whose
primary function is to represent the industry like the Western Australian
Fishing Industry Council. The government's decision to close commercial fishing
for demersal fish in the west coast bioregion is based on science. Commercial
fishing for other species in the west coast bioregion remains open. Commercial
demersal fishing continues in all other regions outside the west coast
bioregion.
