Griffin Coal—Premier Coal
343. Hon Dr Steve Thomas to the Leader of the House
representing the Premier:
I refer to the
formation of the Collie Basin Consolidation Taskforce announced on 21 January
2026 and the proposal for the taskforce to examine the potential merger of Griffin
Coal and Premier Coal.
(1) Has any approach been made to the
relevant ownership structure of either company regarding a merger, including Yancoal
and the debt holders, bond holders, administrators, receivers and liquidators
of Griffin Coal?
(2) If yes to (1), which parties have
been approached and on what date and in what format?
(3) What have
been those parties' responses to date?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) Engagement with relevant parties on the
future of coalmining assets in the Collie basin is being undertaken through the
Collie Basin Consolidation Taskforce announced on 21 January 2026. Members
of the taskforce include the receivers and managers of Griffin Coal, Premier
Coal Ltd, Bluewaters, South32, Newmont, unions and community representatives.
The taskforce is considering whether the basin's two mines would be efficiently
mined by a single entity and has met four times since being announced.
