Banksia Hill Detention Centre and unit 18
260. Hon Dr Brad Pettitt to the minister
representing the Minister for Corrective Services:
What was the
population of young people held in Casuarina Prison's unit 18 for each day of
the preceding fortnight?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member
for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided by the
Minister for Corrective Services.
From 21 to 26 April,
there was one. In the past week, there were zero. Population numbers in unit 18
and juvenile detention numbers more broadly regularly fluctuate. Unit 18 is
required to accommodate the small cohort of very challenging juveniles who
cannot be safely held in the Banksia Hill Detention Centre. When the new
purpose-designed facility is available for this cohort, unit 18 will be closed.
