Reserve Bank of Australia—Treasurer's comments
254. Ms Sandra Brewer to
the Premier:
I refer to the Treasurer's
recent comments disagreeing with the Reserve Bank of Australia's decision to
raise interest rates.
(1) Does the government also disagree
with the RBA's warning that state governments must be conscious of their
inflationary spending?
(2) If not, why not?

(1)–(2) When I was elected, I promised the people
of Western Australia that we would do two things: one, we would keep the
economy strong; two, we would help those who are doing it tough. Let the record
show that members of the Liberal and National Parties oppose our cost-of-living
measures. That is what is coming through here. They are so offended with the
idea that we would actually support those who are doing it tough that they
stand up and oppose our cost-of-living measures in this chamber.
We are very proud of the $1 billion
worth of measures in this budget to help those who are not enjoying the same
level of prosperity in these economic times as others. We will continue to help
those who are doing it tough. We will support cost-of-living measures because
we care. We care about others, and we are making sure that we can all benefit
from the prosperity that Western Australia is receiving both through our broad-ranging
measures—our $100 fuel support payment—as well as our targeted cost-of-living
relief, such as the WA student assistance payment or our low-cost public
transport fares. Those are important measures because we want to make sure that
we keep the economy strong and help those who are doing it tough.
