Budget measures—Job creation293.Mrs Magenta Marshallto theTreasurer:I refer to the Cook
Labor government's commitment to diversifying Western Australia's economy so
that it remains the strongest in the nation. Can the Treasurer
please outline to the house what measures are contained within the most recent
budget that ensure quality, high-paying jobs for Western Australians?Ms Rita Saffioti replied:I thank the member
for that question. Of course, we have a significant, huge commitment to job
creation in this state. Since coming into government, over 380,000 jobs have
been created in WA. It means more jobs andopportunities
for Western Australians around the state. We have a record low level of
unemployment andsignificant employment growth, with over 29% growth since
2017. This budget again backs in job growth around the state. It focuses on a
whole range of areas. The Liberal Party
believes we should be cutting our expenditure on economic infrastructure, but
we are actually increasing it when it comes to energy infrastructure, water
infrastructure and, of course, what we do with our ports to make sure we
continue to grow them. Unlike other states that have privatised much of that
economic infrastructure, all of that is within government control. That means
we need investment on our balance sheet to deliver that economic
infrastructure.We are backing
Westport, which is a new port that will help drive container trade in WA. We
are supporting strategic industries around the state. There is another $92
million to support expenditure from the Strategic Industries Fund to diversify
our economy and new industries. We are supporting Made in WA and more
manufacturing, like we have done with our trains, buses and ferries. We
continue to expand our Made in WA facilities. We are backing the advanced
manufacturing housing facility, both down at the naval base and up in the
northern suburbs with Built Living. A whole range of initiatives will support
WA.We have a strong
economic plan and a strong financial plan. What has the Liberal Party delivered
over the past couple of days? It has delivered more chaos. I mean, what does it
stand for? Unfortunately, I missed the contribution of the member for Nedlands
last night, but I heard it was up there with some of the greatest performances
in this place. The member contradicted the shadow Treasurer. The shadow
Treasurer is going around saying we are spending too much and are giving too
much cost-of-living support, then we had the member for Nedlands saying we are
not giving enough! Who is right on this one?The member for
Nedlands tore up his Liberal Party membership when Colin Barnett was in power
because of net debt. He comes here and tries to compare us to that? We have the
best net debt ratios of any state, territory or federal government. We continue
to invest in economic infrastructure like never before. We are securing jobs
for the future. What have we seen from the opposition members? They cannot
agree one hour to the next or one day to the next. One day, they say our
measures are inflationary and the next day, they say we have not done enough. One
day, they say we have to spend more money, another day they say we are spending
too much. There is no consistent, coherent plan. There is no concern about job
certainty or the future. This is a government
that is delivering a strong set of books and a strong economy, and it continues
to focus on what matters for Western Australians.
