Lobster fishing licences
234. Hon Rob Horstman to
the Minister for Fisheries:
I refer to the
government's 2025 state election commitment to provide long-term security for
lobster fishers by promising resource access security and longer licence
renewal periods. Given that licences are due to renew at the end of June, I ask
the following.
(1) When can our lobster fishers expect
this legislation to ensure long-term security for their businesses?
(2) What consultation has occurred to
date with lobster fishers?
(3) Will the
minister guarantee that the legislation will be treated as a matter of urgency
to ensure our lobster fishers, the Western Rock Lobster Council, processors
and other stakeholders can operate their businesses with greater security?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) An industry reference group including
representatives from the Western Rock Lobster Council was established in
September 2025 to facilitate fishing sector input into the legislative
amendment process. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional
Development (DPIRD) continues to engage with the industry reference group. The
amendment bill will be considered in the context of other government
legislative priorities.
