State economy—Inflation
218. Ms Sandra Brewer to
the Premier:
I refer to Perth's
inflation of 4.9%, the highest in the country in February before the fuel
crisis, and the federal Treasurer's comments that sensible savings and spending
restraint are a central focus of his economic plan.
(1) Does the Premier support the federal
Treasurer's comments that governments must rein in spending?
(2) If yes, does he support his Treasurer's
comments that the inflation that we have at the moment is purely driven by what
has happened in the Middle East and not because everyone is spending too much?

(1)–(2) I certainly agree with the federal
Treasurer when he says that governments should protect the public finances that
they govern. That is the reason that my government has delivered surplus
budgets year upon year upon year. That is the reason that we are the only state
to have regained and retained the Aaa credit rating. No government has done a
better job of sustainable and responsible stewardship of the state's finances
than this one. Someone out there is calling for a 20% cut to stamp duty to
flood the market with surplus funds as part of the government forgoing the
collection of that stamp duty, and that is the person sitting in front of the member
for Cottesloe, who just asked the question. The Leader of the Opposition has
called for a 20% cut in stamp duty.
Ms Rita Saffioti: That's their policy.
Mr Roger Cook: That is their policy. To be fair, it is
the only policy that they have really articulated, other than cutting public
transport fares for the rest of this year. The question that the member for
Cottesloe should pose is not to the government but to her very leader she says
she is loyal to.
