Question
I refer to Government Regional Officer Housing (GROH) in the Pilbara region, and I ask:(a) please provide a breakdown of GROH properties by local government area;(b) for those listed in (a), please provide a breakdown by agency and for each, provide a breakdown by properties that are:(i) occupied;(ii) unoccupied and available; and(iii) unoccupied requiring maintenance or refurbishment; and(c) of the GROH not allocated to agencies, please provide a breakdown by:(i) occupied by Non-governmental Organisations (NGO’s);(ii) occupied by Local Government Authorities; and(iii) occupied by private tenants?
Answer
a) As at 28 February 2026, there are 1,463 GROH dwellings in the Pilbara region
Shire of Ashburton – 154
Shire of East Pilbara – 172
City of Karratha – 692
Town of Port Hedland – 445
b) Over a typical year, approximately one-third of GROH tenancies turn over due to normal regional staff rotations, fixed-term placements, and leave.
Occupancy is not managed by the Department of Housing and Works with each agency managing the occupancy its own allocated dwellings. Vacancy figures are point-in-time only and do not provide a reliable current or ongoing measure.
c) (i-iii) As at 28 February 2026, there are 34 dwellings assigned to non-agency tenants. Non Government Organisations – 16 Local Government Authority – 5 Private tenant - 13
