Question

Victoria and New South Wales are in the process of introducing Portable Rental Bond Schemes. A Portable Rental Bond Scheme allows tenants to digitally transfer their existing rental bond directly from one property to another, eliminating the need to pay a second bond while waiting for the first to be refunded, and I ask:(a) has the Western Australian Government looked into this idea; and(b) has there been any contact with the Victorian or New South Wales governments regarding the idea?

Answer

a. The Cook Government has been focussed on implementing reforms to the Residential Tenancies Act 1987 that streamline the bond release process and enable the Commissioner for Consumer Protection to determine bond disputes. These reforms commenced on 28 March 2026 and provide a wholly new process to ensure faster and fairer release of rental bonds. b. No.
