Public sector—People with disability
185. Mr Jonathan Huston to the Minister for
Disability Services:
I have a
supplementary question.
What specific
actions is the minister taking to raise the rate of disability employment in
the public sector, especially in the senior executive service, which has
dropped by a third?

I thank the member.
Like I have already said, one of the biggest barriers to employment is the
recruitment process. We have opened that up in the public sector and can
directly employ people with disability. A lot of people with disability do not
have to jump through a whole heap of barriers, including a lot of forms,
because managers can reach out directly to people with disability and employ them
directly when they see talent in the community. We have broken down one of the
biggest barriers to people employing people with disability. Of course, we are
actively engaging with our senior services to ensure that they are inclusive
and employing people with disability and from all other areas of our community.
