Boyanup saleyards
231. Hon Amanda Dorn to
the Minister for Agriculture and Food:
I refer to the
minister's answer to question without notice 1271 on 10 December 2025 in which
the minister stated that the Western Australian Livestock Salesmen Association
had addressed any matters arising to the satisfaction of inspectors at the
Boyanup saleyards, and to an inspection by Dr Don Findlay, Bachelor of Science,
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, on 19 December 2025 that documented pens holding
up to 16 heifers, no shade structures and a single bucket per pen.
(1) Will the
minister require the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development
to assess whether those conditions comply with the Animal Welfare
(Transport, Saleyards and Depots) (Cattle and Sheep) Regulations 2020 and, if
not, why not?
(2) As advised by correspondence of 2
September 2025, lease upgrades, including shade and water infrastructure,
remained incomplete at the March 2025 deadline. What steps will the minister
take to ensure completion, and by when?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. The preamble and part of the
wording of the honourable member's question was different from the one that was
submitted; however, the response remains the same. The member might want to
check as the wording was quite different.
(1) Department of Primary Industries and
Regional Development inspectors regularly assess conditions at the Boyanup saleyards.
(2) Upgrades at the Boyanup saleyards are
a matter for the owners and operators.
