Question

Tobacco Products Control Amendment Bill 202654.Mr Peter Rundleto the Minister for Health:I have a supplementary question. Will the minister back the opposition's calls to delegate the powers locally so regional communities do not have to wait for health enforcement teams from the city to crack down on this insidious trade?

Answer

Ms Meredith Hammat replied:First of all, I want to make the point that I do not agree with the basis of the member's question, which is the fact that it requires the particular authority—the minister, in the example the member gave—to sign off does not mean that action will not be taken on compliance activity in regional areas. The bill has a range of mechanisms that provide for penalties and enforcement. As I have said a number of times, we are working closely with the Western Australia Police Force on our enforcement activities, and we will continue to do that. We are very mindful of the requirements of regional Western Australia regarding our compliance activities and the enforcement of the bill. Tobacco Products Control Amendment Bill 2026
