Question

Tobacco and vapes—Minors59.Mr Liam Staltarito theMinister for Health:I refer to theGeneration Vapereport that shows that tobacconists and vape shops are now the number one place that minors are purchasing vapes from, increasing from 23% to nearly 35%. Why does the government believe that just a $10,000 fine for these stores is an appropriate deterrent for selling tobacco and vapes to minors?

Answer

Ms Meredith Hammat replied:I thank the member for the question. We will have an opportunity to get into all this as we progress the legislation through the house, but I want to make these comments so that we are clear. There is a difference in this bill between the sale of lawful products from a licensed premises to minors, as opposed to how the bill would treat the sale of an unlawful product to a minor—for example, illicit tobacco. Those matters are dealt with differently. It is probably appropriate to deal with that level of detail in consideration in detail, which I am happy to do when we get there. Tobacco and vapes—Minors
